At the bridge of the failed painter, I stoop and check the sagging timbers before placing one foot, then the other, on this sorry decrepitude. It cracks and pops like a first fleet ship, but the sounds are not ominous; more the rattled wheezing of an invalid friend. I proceed with care, sucking the thumb pricked on its splintery balustrade. Ahead, lies the gate and welltrod path and, branching like spider veins, the merest hints of tracks―overgrown, leading to a wilderness filled with possibilities. I stand and consider. Buttoning my duffel coat—a veteran of the moth wars, I step off the path, and into the weeds.

opening

shift
Last week Fong and I with the help Dawn Oelrich and her amazing gallery team set up our joint exhibition entitled 'SHIFT". It opened to the public on Monday, however last night the official opening was held.

shift-2

We arrived ahead of our guests; nervous as usual.

shift-3

Son #4 moved to the big smoke last weekend to begin his life as a university student and last night I saw him for the first time this week...but of course I'm not missing him a bit!
shift-7
The first of what we thought would be a modest gathering started arriving.

shift-8

I knew Fong's work would more than pass muster...
shift-5
shift-6
but what did they think of the stuff on the walls?

shift-4

Most of the questions concerning my work were based on the techniques and methods of construction.
 shift-12
After the speeches son #3 --Yi; entertained the crowd with a set of new originals
shift-9
after which son #4 --Bas and friend Jackson adlibbed with some  duelling acoustic improv.
shift-11
All in all a great night.
Thankyou my friends...you know who you are. I won't forget your well wishes and kind support.
 shift-10
All photos in this posting were supplied my baby...son #5 Oliver.
Who IS that gorgeous girl?

Great, Loretta and Ernie - I enjoyed the evening - I wish there had been more time to chat. I need to go back to the gallery and re-look and re-absorb. Anyway, I have done a special Showcase Review on ArtSmelter just for Shift: - a personal response.

Wow you have been busy little beavers! And what a stylish family! Love Fong's shoes! Wish we could have been there in person!

I loved looking at the photos since I couldn't be there personally. The show looks interesting, intriguing and it makes me wish I could see the work up close and in the real.

Glad you had a super opening, sending my best

Excellent LM! I love these pieces (the ones I can make out) ... and adore the rock suitcase - all that heavy baggage we carry around! Good to see you doing some wonderful stuff and good to see you didn't hit the delete button on this record of things ... I do loiter around these parts from time to time, like a drone ... great to get an eyeful of those pictures and glorious images you produce. My blog is only there for the odd creative burst, but it'll stay up ... and meanwhile the rest of this funny old life takes over. the warmest greetings to you and yours! :-)

As opening go…it was really good, the response and support wonderful; more than we expected.
It’s not the best time to chat, mostly it’s spent trying to get round to as many who have made the effort to attend, in order to thank them…like you David. Love your take, your review on our work. http://australianartistcollective.blogspot.com/2010/02/showcase-review-shift.html Thankyou.
I love his shoes too but they didn’t have them in my size!
They have a Jean-Michel Basquiat design embroidered on the leather.
I wish you could have been there too Colette Amelia.
We’ll just have to organize an exhibition in BC
I’m—for once; quite satisfied with how the show looks and totally chuffed at the excellent response so far.
Any praise from a peer especially one as talented as yourself Jafabrit; is high praise indeed.
SHAMELESS where have you been?
It’s so good to have you back.
I wish I could take credit for the emotional baggage but alas they come from the beautiful mind of my husband Fong.
I did make all the stuff on the walls AND the marble sculptures and poor old headless bambi though. I’ll be reading you…
